Kim Yoohyun <Archetype>

“Old, yet new, Korean, yet modern”
The “Archetype” series, consist of traditional Korean tile-roofs and rice-cake moldings

AAIPS Gallery (Art at Asan Institute for Policy Studies) presents a solo exhibition of artist Kim Yoohyun from 29th May to 17th June.

Archetype means the “collective unconscious.” For Kim Yoohyun, who has been experimenting with artistic representation for “Koreaness,” expresses the Korean sentiment and aesthetics through new media in this exhibition. Having crossed over from painting to ceramics to installations, the artist presents all three media in the current exhibition. The “Archetype” series which consist of traditional Korean tile-roofs and rice-cake moldings express Korean traditional life that emphasized the human touch and harmony with nature. Austere when painted black and white, the roofs come to life when painted with bright colors that remind one of the traditional “obang-saek” or the “five-colors.” The rice-cake molds that have been brought back to life as bright, shining objects, express the tender touch of the Korean women who baked the rice-cakes praying for the well-being of their loved ones. Old, yet new, Korean, yet modern, these pieces embody the wishes of the artists for a better future for Koreans.
