Panel Description
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has evolved from a Cold War security collective to a global institution, focusing on transnational issues that threaten the stability and security of its 29 member states. New dangers posed by terrorism, cyber warfare, and weapons of mass destruction mean that European countries can no longer focus solely on what happens on the continent—actions of states as far away as North Korea can pose a threat. A lingering conflict in Ukraine and renewed Russian aggressiveness in the East further complicate the security landscape. As the US expresses doubts about the efficacy of such large alliance structures, what can NATO member countries do to ensure stability in Europe? What are the greatest challenges facing NATO member countries today? What is NATO’s role in the Korean Peninsula and throughout East Asia?
