Asan Plenum

RELEASE EMBARGO DATE: April 28, 2015 at 9:00 AM

Panel: Is the U.S. Back?
Date/Time: Tuesday, April 28, 2015 / 10:15-11:30
Talking Points for: Ambassador Wu Jianmin, International Advisory Committee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PRC

1. The United States is the only superpower in the world today. No country will overtake the United States in any comprehensive way in the foreseeable future, because the United States enjoys superiority in many areas, especially in its capacity for innovation, which is second to none.

2. American decline is relative. Two reasons are behind it:

a. At the dawn of this century, the United States made strategic mistakes in launching the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. These two wars were hugely expensive.

b. The rise of emerging countries has been speeding up in the new century.

3. The United States has never left the Asia-Pacific region. China is ready to cooperate with the United States to promote peace and prosperity in this region. We expect the United States to play a constructive role in that process.
