Amb. Gerhard Sabathil is Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Korea since September 2015. Previously, he was Director for East Asia and the Pacific in the European External Service (2012-15) and Inspector General in 2011. He served as a European Commission official since 1984. He served as the UN Alliance of Civilizations Coordinator of the EU as well as Director for Foreign Policy Strategy and Coordination of the former Directorate General for External Relations of the Commission since 2008. From 2004 to 2008 he has been the Representative of the European Commission to Germany in Berlin and before its Ambassador for Norway and Iceland, based in Oslo. Until 2000 he had been Head of the Division for the Western Balkans in the Commission in Brussels. From 1992 until 1996, Gerhard Sabathil was Counsellor in the Delegation of the EU Commission for the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the OSCE in Prague. Ambassador Sabathil received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Munich University.
