On Friday, October 4, the Asan Institute for Policy Studies hosted a roundtable on “Future of ROK-US Nuclear Cooperation” with Brookings Institution’s Senior Fellow Robert Einhorn, a former Secretary of State’ Special Advisor for Nonproliferation and Arms Control.

In his keynote speech titled ‘US-ROK Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement: Overcoming the Impasse,’ Robert Einhorn explained, based on his experience as a chief negotiator of US-ROK “123” agreement, the civil nuclear agreement and expressed his opinions on key issues such as advance consent for enrichment and reprocessing.

More than 20 Korean nuclear policy experts, including Lee Hong Koo, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea; Han Seung Joo, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea; Kim Myungja, former Minister of Environment; Song Myung Jae, President and CEO of Korea Radioactive Waste Agency; Choi Young-Myung, President of Korea Institute of Nuclear nonproliferation and Control; Chang Soon Heung, KAIST Professor; Han Yong-Sup, Korea National Defense University Professor; Hwang Il Soon, Seoul National University Professor; Suh Kune Yull, Seoul National University Professor; Jun Bong-Geun, Korea National Diplomatic Academy Professor; Lee Jung-Hoon, Yonsei University Professor; Kim Young Hie, Editor-at-Large of Joongang Ilbo, attended the meeting to discuss domestic issues surrounding the negotiations of the ROK-US nuclear agreement such as the need for stable supply of nuclear fuel, the urgency of spent fuel reprocessing, and competitiveness of nuclear power plant exports.
