On Wednesday, August 14, 2013,, the Asan Institute for Policy Studies held the 36th Asan Dosirak Series with Experts with Greg Scarlatoiu, Executive Director of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK).

In his presentation titled, “Human Rights in North Korea under the Kim Jong-un Regime” Mr. Scarlatoiu addressed the history, current state and future prospects of the North Korean human rights situation as well as the oppressive apparatus employed to maintain the status quo in North Korea. The audience learned about the applicable international legal framework and the available remedies embedded in relevant provisions. Mr. Scarlatoiu also addressed the factors that continue to contribute to the longevity of the Kim regime as well as the forces that are eroding the Kim family’s grip on power.

Greg Scarlatoiu is Executive Director of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) in Washington, D.C. Scarlatoiu has been Director of Public Affairs and International Business of the Korea Economic Institute (KEI) in Washington, D.C. and Radio Free Asia (RFA) editorial consultant and Korean language columnist. Before KEI, he was Management Associate for the International Science and Technology Institute, Inc. (ISTI) in Arlington, Virginia, an international development consulting firm contracted by USAID, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. He holds an MA in international relations from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and Seoul National University, and a BA in international relations from Seoul National University. Scarlatoiu is fluent in Korean, French and Romanian. He is a Board member of the International Council on Korean Studies (ICKS). In 1999, Scarlatoiu was conferred the title of Citizen of Honor, City of Seoul.
