On Thursday, August 8, 2013, the Asan Institute for Policy Studies held the 35th Asan Dosirak Series with Experts with Harris Mylonas, Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University.
In the presentation titled, “The Politics of Diaspora Management in the Republic of Korea,” Prof. Mylonas discussed the conditions under which governments decide to cultivate links with emigrants and their descendants abroad and/or to attract them back, based on his current research which deals with the politics of diaspora management. Since nowadays there is a growing number of overseas Koreans, the Korean government should consider the Korean diaspora in the process of policymaking in order to build effective international networks.
In this regard, this Asan Dosirak Series offered an opportunity to Prof. Mylonas to present his arguments regarding what accounts for the variation in policies toward Koreans in China, Japan, North America, and the former Soviet Union.
