The 5th Asan Memorial Lecture was held at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies on August 8, 2011 from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. The invited guest speaker was James J. Heckman, the Henry Schultz Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago and the winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in economics. Professor Heckman gave a presentation entitled “What Tests Miss: Hard Evidence on Soft Skills.” He used economics data and his own extensive research to explain why the reliance on standardized tests to determine success in school and society is misleading. He also presented evidence to show how investment in early education, particularly for disadvantaged children, can benefit society in the long run.
