On April 5th, 2016, the Asan Institute for Policy Studies hosted a closed roundtable with Professor Rosemary Foot, Professor and Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford. The roundtable was entitled “The U.S. Rebalance to Asia: Northeast Asian Perspectives.” Key issues raised included how Northeast Asian actors (focusing on China, Japan, and South Korea) perceive the U.S. rebalance to Asia through the lens of identity, U.S.-China competitive dynamics, and the Chinese response to the rebalance. ROK perceptions of the US rebalance, how it is seen as helpful to the ROK’s broader goals and positioning in global and regional politics, and whether the rebalance strategy has become more or less responsive to South Korean broader policy objectives were also discussed.
