On March 28, 2014, the Asan Institute for Policy Studies and Goldman Sachs co-hosted a conference entitled “Womenomics: Increasing Female Employment and the Future of Korea’s Creative Economy.”
The conference, sponsored by Chosun Ilbo, addressed questions of how to raise the participation rate of women in Korea’s workforce against a backdrop of a gradual decrease in economic growth resulting from a shrinking population brought on about by rapid aging and a low birth rate. Korea’s Minister of Gender Equality and Family Cho Yoonsun, and Goldman Sachs’ Kathy Matsui, the founder of the term “Womenomics” in 1999 as applied to Japan’s situation, discussed why it is time to confront this critical issue for the future of the country.
