Mr. Berger is the director general for North Africa, Middle East, Arab Peninsula, Iraq, and Iran at the European Union External Action Service. He previously served as EU representative in Jerusalem (2008-2011). From 2006 to 2008 he was head of the Crisis Response & Peace-building Unit in the European Commission’s Directorate General for External Relations. From 2005 to 2006, he served as EU-Representative to the Quartet Special Envoy. In previous positions he served as operations officer with the Austrian UN-Peacekeeping Battalion on the Golan, and from 1989 to 1994 worked with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in Gaza and Jerusalem. Mr. Berger holds law degrees from Vienna and the London School of Economics.
