Asan Plenum

Professor Il Soon Hwang is a nuclear energy specialist, with Ph. D. from MIT and B.S. from Seoul National University. He has been leading nuclear plant safety and aging management while establishing Periodic Safety Review protocol as the director of Nuclear Power Performance Research Center (NUPERM). He chairs Korean Nuclear Plant Aging Management Network while serving on expert committees including the German Helmholtz Association. With his experience on the Yucca Mountain Project, he has developed an innovative solution to spent nuclear fuels, internationally known as PEACER and PyroGreen, while serving as the Director of Nuclear Transmutation Energy Research Center of Korea (NUTRECK). He chairs or co-chairs international groups including NUPYRO, NUPID, IHLMCIG, an OECD-NEA Task Force and an IAEA Consultancy Group, the Forum on Climate Change and Energy Policy and the Summit of Honor on Atoms for Peace and Environment (SHAPE).
