Dr. Hwang is Professor and Director of the Nuclear Materials Laboratory at Seoul National University (SNU). He is also Director of the Nuclear Transmutation Energy Research Center of Korea (NUTRECK). Prior to joining the Nuclear Engineering Department at SNU in 1993, he worked as a Research Scientist in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is a leading expert on the management of aging nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and nuclear safety. He received a B.S. in nuclear engineering from Seoul National University (1975), an M.S. in mechanical engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science (1977), and a Ph. D. in nuclear materials engineering from MIT (1987). He is the author or a co-author of over 200 scientific papers, and holds 10 patents for which he received several awards from international scientific societies.
