Panel Description
Asia’s security architecture of bilateral alliances is being reorganized into blocs. The U.S.-led coalition of liberal democracies is working to deter authoritarian regimes from undermining the rules-based order. The competition between continental and maritime visions of Asia also endures as states grapple with the rise of the Indo-Pacific as a new conceptual outlook. Meanwhile, ever since the Six-Party Talks collapsed, Northeast Asia has lacked a forum for dialogue. Meanwhile, ASEAN-led forums have struggled to manage great power disputes. This session discusses what kind of security architecture is likely to emerge in Asia in the coming years. How will states manage their relationships? Are we destined for a new era of bloc politics or can there still be a common security architecture?
