Panel Description
A new arms race is underway in Asia. Security dilemmas are intensifying as countries modernize and expand their military capabilities. The great powers are modernizing and expanding their nuclear arsenals as well as building new delivery systems. Extended deterrence commitments are being renegotiated among allies. New military acquisitions like hypersonic missiles and anti-satellite weapons could alter sensitive military calculations. The use of non-military tools such as control of critical minerals and dual-use items is a new arena of strategic competition. This new arms race presents dangers around miscalculation and crisis escalation. Can states find new approaches to crisis management and arms control during this dangerous period of security crises?
