Kato Yoichi
Mr. Kato Yoichi is a senior research fellow at Asia Pacific Initiative (API), an independent think tank in Tokyo. He is also an adjunct fellow with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining API, Mr. Kato was the national security correspondent at the Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper. He served as the bureau chief of Asahi’s American General Bureau in Washington, D.C. While at the Asahi Shimbun, Mr. Kato was invited to the School of International Studies of Peking University in Beijing as a visiting scholar. He also held research fellow positions at both CSIS and the Institute for National Strategic Studies of U.S. National Defense University in Washington, D.C. In between these research opportunities, he taught national security strategy at Gakushuin University in Tokyo. His recent publications include Trump-Kim summit: Why Japan’s defence strategy hangs in the balance (The Straits Times, June 11, 2018). Mr. Kato has an M.A. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and a B.A. from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
