Jonathan D. George

JONATHAN D. GEORGE is a Senior Fellow of National Security at Lawrence-Livermore National Laboratory where he is responsible for the formulation of defense and security policy affecting strategic capabilities and deterrence. Prior to joining Lawrence-Livermore, George was the Senior Director (Acting) of Defense Policy and Strategy at the National Security Council Staff in the Executive Office of President Barack Obama, where he led an interagency process that crafted policy covering nuclear weapons and associated delivery systems through the Nuclear Posture Review, the Phased, Adaptive Approach of ballistic missile defense, with the Ballistic Missile Defense Review and preparation for the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty between the United States and the Russian Federation. Under the President George W. Bush Administration, George served as the Principal Deputy Administrator for Military Application at the National Nuclear Security Administration, where he was responsible for management and budgeting for America’s nuclear weapons stockpile and related infrastructure. George served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force with command experience in bomber operations and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations. In 2007-2008 he served as the U.S. deputy commanding general in Afghanistan responsible for organizing, training and equipping the Afghan Security Forces. His military staff assignments were at the Pentagon, U.S. Strategic Command and the Department of Agriculture. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy and Education from Southern Illinois University.
