Panel Description
The “liberal values” of human rights, democracy, and individual freedom have undergirded the liberal international order even though the nations that participate in and benefit from the LIO do not universally subscribe to them.. Today, these values are under attack from illiberal forces on the far right and far left of the political spectrum. Around the world, authoritarian governments and extremist non-state actors are chipping away at fundamental rights and using misinformation and propaganda to control societies. The West, consumed by its own internal crises, is struggling to defend the values of liberalism around the world. Can liberal values survive in the “illiberal international order?” Can the LIO survive without the liberal values? How should leaders of the LIO promote liberal values in an increasingly illiberal world order??
