Panel Description
Serious challenges are arising from the “heartland” of the LIO. The spread of international liberalism has had its own downside, including income disparity within and between nations and increased social and political polarization. These trends are found even in the US, where Donald Trump was elected president on an “America First” platform. Such changes have raised serious doubts regarding the sustainability of the liberal international trade order, as well as the security architecture that undergirds it. Is the U.S. willing and able to overcome these challenges and once again lead the LIO? How can American leaders satisfy the demands of their citizens in an era of increasing globalization seemingly without limits? Can American politics be fixed?
