Panel Description
With the U.S.-China strategic competition and the war in Ukraine, cooperation between the U.S. and its allies and partners is being strengthened. However, distrust of the U.S. remains high due to recent events, such as the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, the failure to stop Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the Biden administration’s perceived unilateral tendencies reflected in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). How is the concept of an alliance changing under the current circumstances? Is the alliance still valid in a turbulent world? What is the dilemma the U.S. faces in maintaining an alliance system? What is the perception of allies and partners to U.S. leadership?
